In a powerful demonstration of international collaboration, Interpol and Afripol recently conducted a landmark operation, Africa Cyber Surge II, spanning 25 African countries. This four-month operation targeted cybercriminals and compromised digital infrastructure, resulting in the arrest of 14 suspected cybercriminals and the identification of an astounding 20,674 suspicious cyber networks.
The surge in digital insecurity and cyber threats across the region prompted this joint effort, which unveiled cyber networks tied to financial losses exceeding $40 million. These networks were involved in a spectrum of malicious activities, ranging from online scams and malware hosting to cyber extorsion and phishing attempts.
One of the operation’s key successes was the exposure of the correlation between financial crime and cybercrime. By taking a “follow the money” approach, the participating countries managed to extend their law enforcement response and dismantle cybercriminal networks at their roots.
Notably, the operation leveraged partnerships with private sector entities like Group-IB and Uppsala Security. Their actionable intelligence played a pivotal role in identifying, tracking, and disrupting cybercriminal activities. The operation showcased that when international law enforcement agencies, national authorities, and private sector partners join forces, they can effectively combat the ever-evolving landscape of cyber threats.
Throughout the operation, a myriad of operational highlights underscored its impact:
- In Cameroon, three suspects were apprehended in relation to a significant online scam involving fraudulent art sales valued at $850,000.
- Nigerian authorities arrested a suspect accused of defrauding a Gambian victim.
- Mauritius police detained money mules linked to scams initiated through messaging platforms.
- Gambia successfully took down 185 Internet Protocols (IP) connected to malicious activities.
- Darknet sites were dismantled through collaborative actions by Cameroonian authorities.
- Kenya witnessed the takedown of 615 malware hosters.
It’s important to highlight the proactive approach taken by Interpol, Afripol, and their partners. The timely execution of Africa Cyber Surge II was preceded by a week-long tabletop exercise in Tanzania, which equipped officials from 20 African countries with the skills and knowledge required to execute the operation efficiently.
As the digital landscape evolves and technologies like Information Communication Technologies and Artificial Intelligence grow in prominence, it’s evident that public and private sectors must work hand in hand to prevent their exploitation by cybercriminals. Coordinated operations, such as Cyber Surge, not only disrupt criminal networks but also strengthen individual, organizational, and society-wide cybersecurity levels.
By aligning their efforts and expertise, Interpol, Afripol, and their partners are creating a safer digital future for African communities. This operation reinforces the notion that proactive collaboration is crucial in mitigating cyber threats and protecting the integrity of digital ecosystems.
